In this performance work, the artist’s body is supported by wings made of a steel framework, suspended in midair. White candles burn as molten wax slowly drips down along her palms and the skeletal structure of the wings. Wearing white contact lenses, her vision becomes almost completely blank—she can only perceive faint red triangular flashes of the flames. Against the backdrop of a metropolis filled with skyscrapers, the artist reenacts the myth of Icarus—the young man who fell for flying too close to the sun. By “becoming” Icarus, she attempts to temporarily detach from the socially defined human identity, pausing within a pure white instant between heat and descent.
